Family Disaster Supply Checklist

I attended the Small Business Stakeholder Disaster Awareness Series, hosted by LA Mayor Eric Garcetti’s office, last week. Representatives from the VEDC, Emergency Management Department, Operation Hope, and the Los Angeles Fire Department  were all present and provided small business owners with invaluable information and resources on how to be prepared in the event of a disaster.

One of the resources I received was a “Family Disaster Supply Checklist” and here’s what it recommends you have:

IMPORTANT FAMILY DOCUMENTS – Driver’s license, birth certificates, passports, social security cards, bank account information, and recent photographs of family members. Insurance, loan documents, wills, trusts, and certificates. A list of family members’ contact information, including home, cell and work numbers, and addresses. Copy of important documents saved to a flash drive.

MEDICAL – Medical provider information, medications and instructions on how and when they should be taken. A seven day supply of prescribed medicines and copies of prescriptions. And if medications require special handling or refrigeration, cold packs, ice coolers, or mini refrigerator.

FIRST AID KIT – bandages, gauze, wipes, rubber gloves, rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide.

TOOLS – battery, solar powered or hand-powered crank, AM/FM radio, flashlight with extra batteries, wrench for turning off gas.

SUPPLIES – cash (at least $100-200 in small bills, per person), soap, toilet paper, toothbrush/toothpaste, plastic bags, two sets of clothes, extra shoes, blankets, sleeping bags, extra set of keys, and feminine products.

WATER AND FOOD – One week’s supply of water (1 gallon per person, per day), and non-perishable food.

PERSON’S WITH DISABILITIES & OTHERS WITH ACCESS OR FUNCTIONAL NEEDS – If this applies to you, make sure your emergency kit includes items specific to your needs, along with adaptive or supportive equipment, extra batteries, and instructions on how to operate your equipment.

FOR BABY OR CHILDREN – Formula, bottles, diapers, medications, sanitary supplies, familiar toy or book, car seat.

FOR PETS – Identification tags, extra food and water, clean-up supplies, medicine, transport case, and leash.
